Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a widely researched, evidence based treatment for trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of many other conditions, including depression and anxiety. EMDR accesses our brain’s natural healing process that can get stuck during a traumatic experience.
EMDR is unlike traditional “talk therapy.” During an EMDR session, you will briefly focus on a distressing memory, image, or body sensation while engaging in bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements or tapping). This structured process allows the brain to reactive it’s own healing process, reducing the emotional charge and vividness of the traumatic memory.
Emily Spencer, LPC/LCPC, PMH-C is trained in EMDR and is working toward completing the necessary steps (additional training and consultation) to become an EMDR Certified Therapist. Most often, Emily utilizes EMDR adjunctively to other psychotherapy techniques but EMDR can also be offered as a “stand alone” technique.
Let’s Get Started
I want to invite you to a free, 15 minute consultation with me over Zoom. During this consultation, you can tell me a little bit about yourself and why you’re reaching out and I can answer any questions you may have about getting started, my experience, and my psychotherapy style.
As cliche as it sounds, getting started can be one of the hardest parts of this journey.
